It looks like someone caught my bumper parallel parking last night or this morning. It is down to the plastic so it will not buff out. Excuse the otherwise dirty paint, it sprinkled and dust covered the car.
Any suggestions? The car isn’t really worth anything so I doubt I’m going to pay to fix it. However, besides the headlights needing polished, the body is in good condition and I hate the thought of riding around in a hooptie that needs bodywork.
I can’t wait until the weekend. A few car plans are on the schedule and 348 is fresh out of the shop.
Happy Tuesday.

I Actually laughed. I don’t actually hate this idea.
Well done. Maybe a band-aid
sticker for good measure

GolfR guy sent me some wicked pictures of some damage that happened to his car, hopefully it’s not contagious.

I think wraps still cost quite a bit. Oh well, at least the car made it over 200k before something like this happened. I just don’t want to look like a bad driver that has an opposite camry dent haha

on the bright side, car is lighter now... sooo it’s faster

Damn! Was it super recent? He was supposed to come out for a drive this weekend but had a conflict. Hopefully the rest
west coast oppo vw’s are spared

It’s even on the correct size to help offset driver weight!

New Beetle?

If the plastic isn’t deformed, maybe you could put vinyl on top of it.

Yep. A pretty old, New Beetle.

winning?

I’d just buff out what I could and leave it at that.

The plastic is gouged (sorry for the crappy potato pic) but everything seems to be the correct shape and all the body lines are consistent. Maybe it will look less bad if I can polish out the clear coat damage

Feels more like a participation ribbon. Could have been worse, but could have also not happened lol

That is what I’m starting to think now that the initial shock has worn off and I’ve looked at it a few more times. Or a thiccc ass pinstripe along the fender edge lolol
![]() 05/14/2019 at 12:08 |

If you buffed it and just went along the edge with touchup paint most people probably wouldn’t even notice it. Heck. Most people won’t notice it as it sits now.
![]() 05/14/2019 at 12:09 |

That is true. I could get the spray touch up paint, mask it well, and do a thin coat. Then maybe I wouldn’t notice it every time I walk up to the car. I’ll see if I can look into that this weekend. Thanks!

Most of it will buff out. What’s left could be touched up with a color match brush, then wet sanded, and buffed again. It would be pretty much gone at that point and would cost you about $10 and some elbow grease.

That’s like what happened to my car! Except the damage was at the front of my car and my time got f’d. It looks like someone’s tire scraped my side

I’ll have to go to the forums to find the correct VW spec on that elbow grease ;)
That is what I’m thinking. It looked worse before I actually had a chance to sit down and think about it. I should be able to get it looking good enough for a 13 year old commuter car that is street parked every day and night.

Thank you for this! I will watch later

Damn dude! I can’t believe they got your wheel too. I’m guessing that was a truck? The perils of living in a city. I’m not sure what I would do in your situation. Your car is new and nice enough to warrant fixing. I’m not sure it would be worth it to go through insurance, though.

Not a full wrap, but on singular parts. I am pricing that out for my Miata since the rest of my paint is pretty good aside from the parts I want to wrap. Should only cost me a couple hundred dollars for enough to wrap the hood, mirrors, and trunk. And that stuff can be bought in small amounts for even cheaper. Just havent gotten around to buying it yet.

Oh good so the 348 is going to be ready for Sunday? Got other car plans for the weekend?
And thats unfortunate, im glad my indoor parking is at least pretty safe from idiots running into me.
![]() 05/14/2019 at 12:34 |

Yep, it should be ready to go! It’s even clean haha
There is a little cars and coffee organized by the local dealer Saturday morning. Originally, a bunch of owners were going to meet for our semi-annual work on cars and tell outlandish stories gathering, but that was moved into June.

Cool! I’ll talk to you about that this weekend.

I’m guessing a truck too. I'll probably either get a place like Dr Wheel to fix it, or just order a new rim. Insurance deductible is $1,000
![]() 05/14/2019 at 12:45 |

Ouch. Hopefully it can be repaired. Maybe keep an eye out for an extra wheel on CL/Ebay/special at ECS. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to keep this one as a full sized spare.

He just posted these in another comment. Such a bummer!

Could have been worse. It seems like most of the white clear coat marring will come out pretty easy.
![]() 05/14/2019 at 15:16 |

True that. Hope it gets fixed painlessly...
![]() 05/14/2019 at 15:39 |

I think it is going to be some elbow grease and touch-up
paint. Hopefully it turns out ok
![]() 05/14/2019 at 20:29 |

What’s your collision deductible? If it’s only a few hundred dollars it would be worth it to file a claim and get it fixed. Your rates won’t go up because of it.
![]() 05/15/2019 at 11:45 |
|
$500. All of the white will polish out. I think I can get the rest looking ok with some touch up. My front bumper is covered in chips from midwest winters so I guess this isn’t the end of the world.
![]() 05/15/2019 at 13:20 |
|
Ah yeah $500 is outside of the realm of, “it sucks, but manageable .” But that’s why I keep mine at $250. It only costs me a few extra bucks per policy period, but then when I need it, it doesn’t hurt.
![]() 05/15/2019 at 13:37 |
|
Yeah, I did a cost/benefit analysis and it did not seem worth it for my 13 year old, nearly worthless (according to KBB), Beetle. I have a $0 deductible on the Ferrari, though.
![]() 05/15/2019 at 14:31 |
|
Double check with your insurance on the cost of lowering the collision on the Beetle, and also the comprehensive. I have my comp set to the lowest possible, which I think is $25. It costs me less than $50 a year, or something like that. I have used comp way more because lots of shit seems to fall o my cars. It’s actually fun to go into the body shop for a $2,000 job and have the receptionist do a double take when she asks for my deductible.
And yet my rates have never gone up. Mercury could eventually just cancel my coverage, but I’m not abusing my coverage.

I’ve been meaning to look at new insurance anyway. When I do, I’ll look at everything. I’m already paying more than I think I should. Last time I looked, it was basically a wash though. I typically shop every 6 months.
